Treat the crossing as a separate part of the route
For a European EV holiday, a ferry changes more than the route on the map. Your departure charge must satisfy any boarding limit while leaving enough energy for the road after arrival. A long overnight sailing does not necessarily replenish the battery, and a charger near a port may be outside the check-in area rather than beside your boarding lane.
Start with three questions for the actual booking: is your vehicle accepted, is there a maximum battery percentage, and is a charging space confirmed on this sailing? Check again if the operator substitutes a vessel. Save the booking instructions offline alongside the port address; a general EV travel blog cannot override the conditions of your ticket.
The 40% limit is not a universal European rule
Blue Star Ferries publishes a maximum 40% battery charge for fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles under its Greek-service policy. Its booking instructions require the appropriate EV category, including a separate category for a car with a roof box over two metres high. The company also describes battery-temperature checks, requires drivers to alert crew to a vehicle alarm and excludes vehicles with relevant battery or power-system damage.
That is a specific operator policy, not evidence that every European ferry requires the same charge level. Ask the operator for your route before deciding where to charge. If a cap applies, plan your final charging stop and drive to the terminal so that you arrive below it with a sensible margin, while retaining enough energy for the destination. Do not assume staff will waive the cap if you arrive over it; contact the operator before travel if your itinerary cannot meet its conditions.
No onboard charging is the safe planning assumption
Brittany Ferries currently says that electric and hybrid cars cannot charge aboard its ferries, directing passengers to port guides for nearby charging. Stena Line likewise says it does not currently provide onboard EV charging. For these operators, budget the sailing as a transport leg, not as time connected to a charger.
There are exceptions. Irish Ferries' FAQ, updated on 16 June 2026, lists six charging spaces on Ulysses for Dublin–Holyhead and three on W.B. Yeats for Dublin–Cherbourg. It tells drivers to reserve charging as a booking extra, bring their own cable and observe the earlier charging-space check-in requirements. If the extra is absent, the FAQ says charging is unavailable on the selected vessel.
Even a reserved space should be a convenience rather than your only way to reach the next charger. Vessel changes and equipment problems are reasons to retain a land-based fallback. Check the stated AC power and crossing duration instead of expecting motorway rapid-charger performance; your car's own AC limit also matters. Use only the operator's designated facility, never an improvised connection to a vehicle-deck socket.
Work backwards from the first reliable charger after landing
Pick a primary charging hub after the arrival port and a reachable alternative. Check access hours, connector compatibility, payment method and recent availability information. A port map showing a charger is not proof that it is public, functioning or accessible after you pass through the terminal. Allow for traffic, diversions and the possibility that the first site is busy.
Here is an illustrative calculation, not a road test or a recommended universal charge target. With a 60 kWh usable battery, boarding at 35% and retaining a 15% reserve leaves 12 kWh for subsequent driving. At an assumed 20 kWh/100 km, that represents 60 km before reaching the reserve. It excludes energy consumed while parked, so the practical allowance would be lower if the car uses energy during the crossing.
Replace those assumptions with your own car's usable capacity and observed consumption in comparable conditions. A roof box, headwind or cold weather can change the result. If the first dependable charger is too far away within a required boarding cap, revise the arrival charging plan or sailing rather than planning to reach it with virtually no reserve. Where no cap applies, choose a departure charge that comfortably covers the onward leg without relying on onboard charging.
Prepare the car, the overnight bag and the dog separately
Stena Line says passengers cannot remain in their vehicles at sea and that its vehicle deck is closed to public access during the crossing. It describes accompanied pet visits on certain longer crossings, not unrestricted access. Confirm the arrangements for your particular operator and route before assuming you can return for luggage or check the car.
Take medication, documents, charging cards, keys and everything needed during the crossing into the passenger areas. Before travel, find the manufacturer's instructions for alarms, tilt sensors and any transport setting, then follow the crew's boarding instructions. Do not experiment with unfamiliar settings while the loading queue is moving, and do not rely on mobile reception to unlock the car after arrival.
For a family travelling with a dog, confirm an operator-approved pet arrangement before booking. A pet-friendly cabin or another permitted accommodation option is a separate reservation question from transporting the EV. Dog Mode or remote climate control is not a substitute for the operator's pet rules or a welfare plan when you cannot freely access the vehicle. Confirm whether the dog may stay in the car, what access is possible and what alternatives exist on the exact sailing.
- Declare the correct vehicle type and check the booking's dimensions against the car with its roof box, rear carrier or trailer fitted.
- Confirm battery limits, charging-space availability and check-in time for both the outward and return sailings.
- Save a primary and backup charging stop after each arrival port; do not make the ship your only charging plan.
- Pack a separate passenger bag and confirm pet accommodation and vehicle-deck access before departure.
What the evidence does—and does not—show

They document practical service conditions, not measured comparisons of vehicle fire risk or independent tests of charging reliability. Owner reports about easy boarding or a successful charging session can help identify questions, but cannot guarantee the same facilities on another ship or establish the rules for a future sailing.
The practical verdict is simple: an EV ferry trip is a booking-and-energy-planning task. Match the battery level to the actual operator's conditions, arrange the people and pets independently of the parked car, and keep enough energy to reach a dependable charger after landing. Recheck the linked policies before paying and again before departure, because routes, vessels and conditions can change.
