Full review

What it is like to live with

The iX1 feels like a polished premium SUV first and an EV second. Its compact width, upright cabin and large boot suit Portuguese family and business use, while the modest DC peak makes repeated European motorway stops slower than in the newest 800-volt rivals.

What works

High-quality cabin and excellent infotainment

Useful 490 L boot in a 4.50 m body

Up to 514 km WLTP and optional 22 kW AC charging

What irritates

130 kW DC charging trails newer rivals

M Sport suspension and wheels can feel firm

No front boot and desirable equipment can add cost

Family + dog

Compact premium size with a useful square boot

The 490-litre rear compartment suits a medium dog and family luggage better than most city-sized EVs, although there is no frunk to isolate charging cables.

Trips + camping

Good range, slower rapid-charging rhythm

Up to 514 km WLTP and a comfortable cabin support European travel, but the 130 kW DC peak creates longer repeated stops than newer 800-volt premium rivals.

City + daily life · 4.3/5

Premium SUV utility without excessive width

A 4.50-metre length and 1.845-metre width fit Portuguese parking better than the larger Q6, iX3 or electric GLC, while the M Sport ride should be tested on rough roads.

Cargo · 4.4/5

A strong client-facing small-business EV

The regular 490-litre boot, 1,495-litre folded capacity and polished cabin suit sales, service and professional use where presentation matters as much as practical space.

Taxi + high mileage · 4.1/5

Best for premium urban work, not maximum uptime

Passenger ambience and luggage capacity are credible for executive transfers, but average DC charging and premium purchase costs weaken ordinary TVDE economics.

Details worth knowing

Three useful fun facts

  1. 01

The eDrive20 sends power through the front wheels, unlike the rear-drive layout associated with many traditional BMWs.

  2. 02

With optional 22 kW AC charging, a full charge can take about 3 hours 45 minutes on a compatible post.

  3. 03

Its 490-litre boot expands to 1,495 litres, unusually useful for a compact premium EV.

Next iX1 is expected to move directly to Neue Klasse

The report expects BMW to replace the current iX1 in late 2027 rather than give it a conventional facelift. This remains an informed projection, but it is useful timing context for buyers considering the current Portuguese M Sport campaign.
