The battery is more than fuel

An EV arrives at a campsite carrying a large energy store. Models with vehicle-to-load, or V2L, can turn part of that battery into ordinary AC power for lights, a portable refrigerator, laptops, camera batteries or a coffee machine. Typical systems provide roughly 2.3 to 3.6 kW, but the exact limit and adapter vary by car and market.

Small camping loads use far less energy than driving. A 60 W refrigerator running intermittently, LED lighting and phone charging may consume only a modest share of a 60–80 kWh battery overnight. High-power cooking or heating changes the calculation quickly, so owners should know the output limit, keep a departure reserve and avoid improvised electrical connections.

Quiet comfort without idling

Cars with a dedicated camping or utility mode can maintain ventilation or climate control without an idling engine. That is useful for sleeping in the vehicle, waiting out rain or keeping a dog comfortable while an adult remains nearby. Climate use is not free: hot or cold weather can consume meaningful energy, and a pet must never be left based on an assumption that a system cannot fail.

Many electric crossovers also have a long wheelbase, flat rear floor and useful underfloor storage. The decisive measurement is the shape remaining after the dog, bedding and kitchen equipment are loaded. A published luggage figure may include spaces that cannot hold a standing animal, while a square 500-litre boot can work better than a larger but awkward one.

The campsite rules are as important as the car

A campsite pitch socket is not automatically an EV charger. Older electrical installations may not support hours of continuous high current, and some operators prohibit vehicle charging or charge separately for it. Ask first, use approved equipment and prefer a proper destination charger when one is available.

Towing a caravan is the hard case. Electric motors are smooth and strong, but aerodynamic drag can cut motorway range dramatically. A trailer may also block access to chargers, forcing the driver to unhitch. For tent camping or a compact trailer, an efficient EV with V2L can be unusually convenient; for a large caravan, route layout and real towing consumption should lead the purchase decision.

  • Confirm that the V2L adapter is included, not merely supported.
  • Set a battery reserve for the drive out of the campsite.
  • Check whether the destination permits charging from pitch sockets.
  • Test the sleeping floor and dog/luggage arrangement before buying.
