The motorway test is different from the brochure
WLTP range is useful for comparing cars, but steady motorway speed, wind, rain, winter temperatures and roof boxes can reduce it. Long-distance suitability therefore depends on the whole system: consumption at 120–130 km/h, the usable battery window, charging speed, how long the car sustains that speed, battery preconditioning and the accuracy of the route planner.
A car that travels 280 km and then charges reliably in 20 minutes can be easier to tour in than one that travels farther but needs 40 minutes at every stop. For a family with a dog, a break every two or three hours may already be desirable. That turns charging into part of the rest schedule instead of a separate delay.
Three journeys, three useful lessons
A Ford Explorer owner described a 4,000 km family holiday through France, Switzerland and Italy. He reported abundant French motorway charging, no queues on his route and a more relaxed rhythm built around coffee breaks. It is a manufacturer-hosted owner story, so it should not be treated as a controlled test, but its itinerary and practical details are useful.
A Business Insider account followed a BYD Dolphin Surf on an unexpected 1,000-mile trip from Spain toward Germany after the family's camper broke down. The small EV made the journey, including travel with dogs, but took about four hours longer than their usual trip. Charging stops became nap and rest opportunities; the trade-off was time rather than feasibility.
A separate 2025 trip documented travel across ten European countries, including France, Spain and Italy. Its strongest lesson is that infrastructure is not uniform: the driver should carry more than one way to find and pay for charging, check hotel charging in advance and keep a backup site within the remaining range.
A realistic Portugal-to-Europe strategy
Leave home at a high state of charge, but do not expect every later stop to run from 0% to 100%. Rapid charging is normally fastest in the middle of the battery, so a sequence of shorter 10–70% or 10–80% stops is often quicker. Arrive with enough reserve to reach an alternative charger if a bay is blocked or unavailable.
France is usually the easy portion of a western-European itinerary because major routes have dense high-power coverage. Spain, Portugal and rural destinations can require more deliberate planning, while busy holiday corridors may create queues. The journey becomes comfortable when the driver chooses food, dog-walking and overnight stops that already have charging—not when every charging stop is treated as dead time.
