Prepare for the ordinary faults, not only an empty drive battery
An electric car can stop because its high-voltage battery is empty, but it can also suffer a puncture, a failed 12-volt battery, damaged charging hardware, a software fault or an ordinary mechanical problem. The latest ADAC breakdown statistics provide useful measured context: among its 2025 call-outs for cars aged two to nine years, the 12-volt battery was the leading cause across powertrains, responsible for 45.4% of breakdowns. That figure covers the analysed fleet rather than EVs alone, so it should not be presented as an EV-specific failure rate.
The practical lesson is that an EV recovery plan still needs the basics. Store the assistance number and policy details offline, know where the warning triangle and reflective vest are, keep the locking-wheel-nut key accessible, and learn how to open the charge port and luggage compartment if the 12-volt system is unavailable. Check the handbook for the location of the towing eye, approved jacking points and any transport or tow mode before a trip.
- Confirm that breakdown cover applies in every country on the route.
- Check whether running out of charge, onward travel and recovery to a suitable repairer are included.
- Save the vehicle identification number, insurer, assistance provider and rental or leasing contact offline.
- Carry the model handbook digitally and, if practical, on paper.
If range reaches zero, do not plan around a hidden reserve
ADAC drove several EVs beyond a zero-range display under mild, nearly level test conditions. The cars warned and limited the driver in different ways, then could shut down quickly once performance fell. ADAC explicitly cautions that any emergency reserve may be smaller or absent in winter, on a climb or with an older battery. This is measured test evidence, but it is not a promise about a different model or situation.
Use the early warnings to leave the traffic flow and stop somewhere reachable by assistance. If the car has stopped, switch on the hazard lights, follow the local road-safety rules and give the operator your exact location, direction of travel, remaining charge shown, warning messages and vehicle model. A mobile charging unit may add enough energy to reach a nearby charger, but this service is not universal. RAC, for example, advertises a ten-mile mobile boost on equipped UK patrol vans; that is a provider capability, not a Europe-wide standard.
Do not depend on another EV as an improvised rescue charger. Some cars can supply AC power, but compatible equipment, power limits and long transfer times make this an uncertain roadside solution. The reliable plan is professional assistance with either a supported mobile charge or transport to an accessible, working charger.
Use 112 for danger or injury—not as routine roadside assistance
The EU-wide emergency number 112 is free and works throughout the European Union. Use it when there has been a collision, someone is injured, there is fire or smoke, or the stopped vehicle creates an immediate danger. For an ordinary breakdown in a safe place, contact the breakdown provider, motorway operator or insurer instead.
Cars based on a newly approved model after 31 March 2018 must have EU 112-based eCall. In a serious crash it can call automatically and transmit a minimum data set that includes location, time, vehicle identification and direction of travel; the SOS control can also activate it manually. eCall is an emergency channel, while a manufacturer-branded assistance button may route to a separate paid or included service. If the high-voltage system may be damaged, tell the call handler that the vehicle is electric and follow the emergency services' instructions. Do not touch exposed orange cables, leaking components or a damaged battery enclosure. Move people away from traffic and the vehicle when it is safe to do so.
Recovery must follow the exact car manual
Many EVs should not be transported with driven wheels turning on the road. Regeneration and drivetrain design can create heat or electrical damage, and a car with no low-voltage power may be unable to enter its approved tow mode. ADAC therefore advises that an EV which has exhausted its drive battery will normally need a recovery vehicle rather than an ordinary tow.
Manufacturer instructions take priority because procedures differ. Volvo's guidance for the electric XC40, for example, limits towing to short positioning movements, requires tow mode when available and says full transport should keep every wheel off the ground on a recovery vehicle such as a flatbed. That is a useful illustration, not a universal specification. Give the recovery operator the exact make, model, drivetrain and fault, and ask them to check the model-specific transport procedure.
Owner forum posts can be valuable for discovering practical details such as a difficult towing-eye cover, a charge flap that will not release or a recovery firm arriving without wheel dollies. Those reports remain anecdotes unless the model, conditions and recovery procedure are documented. Use them to form questions, not to override the handbook or a trained recovery operator.
- Ask for EV-trained assistance and describe whether the car can power on, select neutral or release its parking brake.
- Request an all-wheels-off-ground recovery when the handbook requires it.
- Photograph warning messages and visible damage before the vehicle is moved, if this is safe.
- After recovery, obtain a written fault and transport record for warranty or insurance purposes.
The five-minute pre-trip check
Before crossing a border, verify the assistance territory, maximum vehicle mass, towing-distance limit, repair-destination rule and whether passengers, pets, accommodation and a replacement car are covered. A policy described as European may exclude particular countries or provide only local recovery. Rental and leasing contracts may require the driver to call their nominated provider first.
Then test access to the assistance number, place a reachable backup charger in the navigation system and leave a weather-appropriate energy reserve. The goal is not to make breakdowns seem uniquely likely in an EV. It is to make the different parts of recovery—low-voltage access, high-voltage safety, emergency charging and wheel-off-ground transport—predictable before they are needed.
