How EV Guide
defines a strong match.
Scores measure how well a specific version performs a particular job. They are editorial suitability ratings, not safety scores, laboratory measurements or a universal verdict on the car.
Fit for this guide
Each car receives seven scores from 0 to 5, shown to one decimal place. The assessment combines Portugal-market specifications, manufacturer data, independent tests and recurring owner evidence. A high score means the car is well suited to that use; it does not mean every buyer should choose it.
The seven ratings
We rate practical outcomes. Price, trim, battery, charging, dimensions and evidence maturity are judged for the exact version named on the page wherever possible.
City-friendly
Urban size, manoeuvrability and efficiency. An explicit editorial score is used for current entries.
Europe travel
Motorway range, charging speed and curve, comfort, route-planning confidence and luggage practicality.
Pet-friendly
Usable load-space shape, access, floor height, ventilation and comfort—not the quoted litre figure alone.
Camping
Load flexibility, sleeping potential, towing, roof load, V2L where available and charging away from home.
Cargo / business
Load-space usefulness and access, payload practicality, operating context and workday suitability.
Taxi / high mileage
Efficiency, charging downtime, rear-seat comfort, luggage room, warranty context and long-day usability.
Strongest matches for this view
The homepage first builds the eligible set from the active Use case and EV type filters. It then ranks that set by the rule below and shows the first three cars. Changing an EV type changes the eligible pool, not the scoring formula.
City & commuting
Uses the City-friendly score.
Family
Average of Everyday, Pet-friendly and Cargo / business.
Family & pets
Uses the Pet-friendly score.
Europe travel
Uses the Europe travel score.

When “All needs” is selected
The ranking is the equal-weight average of City-friendly, Everyday, Europe travel, Pet-friendly, Camping, Cargo / business and Taxi / high mileage. Low running costs is intentionally separate because it is a financial use case rather than a physical suitability dimension.
Filter eligibility prevents empty combinations
Use-case filters admit cars that clear a suitability threshold: 4.2 for City, Europe travel, Camping, Taxi and Low running costs; 4.0 for Pet-friendly; and 4.1 for Business & cargo. Family requires an Everyday score of at least 4.4 plus a Pet-friendly score of at least 3.4 or seven seats. EV type membership uses the car’s primary segment plus explicit cross-category rules for family, premium, long-range and affordable discovery. Options that would return no cars are disabled.
Evidence and judgement
Scores are not copied from third-party star ratings. Official figures establish the version and specification; independent road tests and owner evidence help assess real usability. New cars may carry more uncertainty, promotions can expire, and manufacturer luggage conventions are not always comparable.
How ties and missing values work
Ties retain the curated catalogue order. Current cars use explicit City, Cargo and Taxi scores. If a legacy entry lacks one, City is conservatively derived from Everyday with a size adjustment, Cargo follows the Pet-friendly score, and Taxi is the average of Everyday and Europe travel until the entry is reviewed.
