Check weights before comparing battery sizes

An EV that can accept a tow bar is not automatically approved to pull a caravan. Start with the exact vehicle's registration document, certificate of conformity and manual. Confirm the permitted braked-trailer mass, nose or vertical load, gross vehicle mass and maximum authorised mass of the complete combination. Options, passengers, a dog, luggage and accessories all consume payload; the brochure's largest towing figure may apply only to another motor, battery or wheel configuration.

Weigh the loaded caravan and tow car rather than relying only on an empty or advertised figure. Water, gas bottles, bicycles, an awning and camping equipment accumulate quickly. The car's strong low-speed torque does not change a legal mass limit, and a tow bar approved only for a bicycle carrier must not be treated as a towing approval.

Licence and insurance checks are separate. Your Europe confirms that EU driving-licence categories are recognised across the EU, but the permitted vehicle-and-trailer combination depends on the category held and the authorised masses. It also warns that a trailer may need separate insurance in some countries. Before crossing a border, verify the combination against the issuing authority, destination-country rules and insurer; carry the vehicle, trailer and insurance papers.

  • Match the exact EV variant to its approved braked-trailer and nose-load limits.
  • Calculate payload for people, pets, luggage and accessories in the tow car as well as the caravan.
  • Confirm the licence category using maximum authorised masses, not an estimate of today's actual load.
  • Ask the insurer in writing whether the trailer needs separate cover in every country on the route.

Use measured towing evidence as a planning range—not a promise

The Touring Club Switzerland tested five EVs over the same 198 km route, more than 95% of it motorway, with trailers loaded close to each vehicle's permitted maximum. Energy use increased by 62% to 147%, averaging 103.8%. The spread matters more than the average: vehicle shape, trailer mass and aerodynamics produced very different results under the same test design.

ADAC's separate 1,281 km journey through Germany, Austria, Italy and Slovenia used a Kia EV6 AWD and a 1,600 kg family caravan. Displayed consumption averaged 36.6 kWh/100 km against the test team's usual 20 kWh/100 km, an 83% increase. Usable range fell from nearly 400 km to about 220 km; with reserve, practical legs were around 180–200 km. Charging losses raised the energy actually bought to 40.7 kWh/100 km.

An Austrian Camping Club journey offers another real-world point: its Hyundai Ioniq 5 AWD and caravan covered 1,800 km, including the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, and the reported energy increase was about 70%. This is a documented owner-led tour published by ÖAMTC, not a controlled comparison. Together, the results support a conservative first plan but do not justify one universal penalty. Wind, speed, elevation, temperature, caravan shape and mass can move consumption substantially.

Run a local calibration trip before the border

Tow the fully loaded combination over a representative motorway and hill route near home before the holiday. Record distance, weather, average speed, elevation, starting and arrival percentages, and displayed consumption. Use the worse stable figure to plan the first long leg, then update later stops from the actual result. A screenshot from another owner is useful for spotting possible issues, but it is anecdotal unless the trailer, speed, weather and route are comparable.

Speed has a large effect because a caravan presents a broad frontal area. Follow the applicable towing limit and settle into a smooth pace instead of repeatedly accelerating to close gaps. Avoid abrupt steering or braking, keep the caravan correctly loaded, and use the stability and towing settings specified by the manufacturer. Electric drive can make low-speed manoeuvring precise, but it does not remove ordinary trailer-safety requirements.

Long descents need the same discipline. Regeneration can help control speed and recover energy, yet its strength may be reduced when the battery is full, cold, hot or otherwise limited. Select the descent mode recommended in the manual, leave room in the battery where practical and be prepared to use the service brakes. Never plan a mountain descent on the assumption that regeneration will always provide the same braking force.

Plan the charger entrance before planning the kilowatts

A high-power charger is only useful if the combination can enter, turn and reach the cable without blocking traffic or other bays. Both the ADAC tour and the TCS test found that most charging layouts required the trailer to be uncoupled. Satellite imagery, recent photographs and operator descriptions can help, but they may not show temporary barriers, parked cars or the direction of circulation.

Prefer drive-through bays or large service areas with legal space to detach the caravan. Identify the uncoupling area before arrival and keep the charging cable, wheel chocks and hitch tools accessible. Do not block multiple charging bays or leave a detached caravan where it obstructs traffic. If the site is unclear, call the operator or choose a less powerful but workable location.

Keep a second reachable charger for every planned stop. ADAC encountered two complete charging-site failures during its four-country trip and a payment problem at another stop; that journey took place before current infrastructure improvements, so it is evidence of what happened on that route rather than today's failure rate. The lasting lesson is geometric as well as electrical: the backup must accept the car's connector, sit inside the towing reserve and have space for the complete combination.

  • Inspect access roads, turning space, bay direction and cable position.
  • Choose a legal, safe place to uncouple before entering a conventional nose-in charging bay.
  • Save a multi-stall primary site and a genuinely reachable backup.
  • Carry more than one payment method and check live status shortly before arrival.

Treat campsite electricity as booked infrastructure

Ask the campsite whether it has a dedicated EV charge point, whether it can be reserved, and how energy is billed. A pitch socket is not automatically approved for traction-battery charging; it may have a low current limit, share capacity with other pitches or be prohibited for EV use. Get permission and use only the equipment and current limit accepted by the site and vehicle manufacturer. Do not improvise with domestic adapters or extension reels.

Destination charging can remove a rapid stop the next morning, but do not arrive near empty until access has been confirmed. Record opening hours, gate codes and the fallback charger outside the campsite. If the site offers a dedicated charger, ask whether the caravan can remain coupled and whether the bay is accessible after reception closes.

On the road, compare cost per 100 km using the measured towing consumption and energy billed by the charger, including any session or idle fee. The ADAC trip paid for 522 kWh across eight sessions and reported €233 in 2022 prices. That historic total is not a current European price benchmark; it demonstrates why a caravan's higher consumption and charging losses need to be included in the trip budget.

The practical departure sheet

Put the essential numbers on one page: approved tow and nose loads, weighed vehicle and caravan masses, licence category, insurer contacts, measured kWh/100 km, expected leg length and the minimum arrival reserve. Add the speed, toll and safety rules for each country, plus the campsite's written charging confirmation. Rules and tariffs vary, so recheck official national sources shortly before travel.

Then save the route's drive-through or uncoupling-friendly chargers and one workable backup for every leg. Travel with enough time to detach safely rather than treating the fastest possible charging curve as the schedule. The electric motor may be the easiest part of the combination; range prediction and physical charger access are the parts that need rehearsal.
